Richard is HVS’s Senior Managing Partner for the Latin American Region. HVS is a global leader in providing consulting services to hotel developers and investors, hotel chains, lenders, and other participants in the hotel and tourism industry. The division under Richard’s direction is involved in the preparation of market and feasibility studies and appraisals for hotels across Mexico, Central and South America. The company analyzes varied hotel assets, ranging from economy to luxury in urban and resort settings. HVS is similarly active in the analysis of complex mixed-use and master-planned projects and participates in the formulation of expansion strategies on behalf of investors and operators.
Considering his broad experience in the real estate capital markets and across asset types, Richard and the LATAM team can add value in a variety of ways, as investors, developers and others pursue complex projects across emerging economies in the region. In addition, Richard is responsible for the expansion of HVS’s platform in the region, including Transaction Services and Asset Management. He also launched Mexico’s leading hotel investment conference, HVS MexHIC, which has brought together industry professionals annually for over a decade.
Richard has been involved in hotel and real estate advisory services in Mexico and other Latin American countries since 1992. He founded Grupo Inmobiliario Inova, a real estate advisory boutique sold in 2001 to Insignia/ESG, which later merged with CB Richard Ellis. At that time, Richard joined HVS to create a leading hotel advisory platform in the Latin American region.
Like many others at HVS, Richard enjoys and is committed to training associates from varied backgrounds so that they may expand their perspectives and pursue growth opportunities.
Richard’s prior professional experience includes positions with Laventhol & Horwath (now Horwath HTL) where he performed hotel feasibility analyses for projects in the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean, and Fischer-Macleod Associates, a New York-based developer of regional shopping centers. Richard later joined The Yarmouth Group (later part of Morgan Stanley), where he executed acquisitions of office buildings, regional shopping centers, and hotels and managed real estate portfolios on behalf of U.S. and Japanese institutional clients. In addition, he participated in establishing the company’s presence in Europe, opening an office in Paris and overseeing investment and asset management assignments in Germany, Spain, and the U.K.
Richard was born and raised in Mexico City. He completed his undergraduate studies at Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration and earned his MBA from The Wharton School. He is fluent in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. Richard has served on the Board of Trustees of The American School Foundation, A.C.

As the South American hotel industry is recovering after the pandemic hit the continent hard, Richard Katzman (Managing Director, HVS Mexico City) and Fernanda L'Hopital (Senior Project Manager, HVS Buenos Aires) gave an interview to TOPHOTELNEWS about the current status of development prospects across this continent.
The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting restrictions on domestic and international travel, economic activity, and individual movement are having an unprecedented impact on the lodging and tourism industry in Latin America. While government authorities across the region work to manage restrictions and phased reopening plans, uncertainty prevails over the duration of the global pandemic.
Richard Katzman, Managing Director of HVS Mexico City, oversees the company’s consulting practice throughout Latin America. In this webinar, organized by Mexico’s leading real estate industry magazine and media platform, Inmobiliare, Richard and four fellow panelists discuss an anticipated path to recovery for the hotel and travel industry.
Mexico City is one of the most densely populated and developed urban areas in the world. How will rising foreign direct investment amplify the dynamics of the city’s office and lodging markets in the wake of the recent recession?
