New Airport Opens in South of Maldives Return to Headlines

The opening of Kooddoo Airport, in the Gaafu Alifu Atoll, is set to open up the southern part of the Maldives. This area has traditionally received less visitors than the northern half, due to the long transfer from the capital, Malé. Previously, tourists would take up to two hours to reach their accommodation in this area. With the new airport, travel time will be reduced to 45 minutes from Malé International Airport. The Kooddoo Airport will be serviced by the national carrier, Maldivian, which will fly to Malé twice daily.

 
Hilton to Debut in New Caledonia Return to Headlines

Hilton Worldwide is set to expand its portfolio in Australasia with its entry into New Caledonia. The hotel company has signed a franchise agreement with GLP Hotels for a 154-key conversion project in Noumea, New Caledonia. The property, currently known as La Promenade, will undergo refurbishment before being rebranded as the Hilton Noumea La Promenade Residence in mid 2013. The property will be located on Anse Vata Beach and will be Hilton's fourth property in the South Pacific. Currently, Hilton Worldwide has a portfolio of 15 hotels in Australasia.

 
Hard Rock Hotels Ventures into Mainland China Return to Headlines

Hard Rock International will be entering mainland China with the launch of two hotels, in collaboration with golf resort operator Mission Hills. The two new Hard Rock hotels will be located in Shenzhen and Haikou and are expected to open in 2015. The Hard Rock Hotel Shenzhen will comprise of 280 rooms and will be part of a new 50-hectare Mission Hills Centreville complex, while the 250-room Hard Rock Hotel Haikou will be located in the Town Centre development on Hainan Island. Hard Rock currently operates 18 hotels and casinos worldwide, including one in Macau, but this will be its first property in mainland China.

 
Frasers Launches High-Tech Brand Return to Headlines
Frasers Hospitality has launched its high-tech brand, Capri by Fraser, with the opening of Capri by Fraser @ Changi City. The 313-unit property is the latest addition to the Fraser portfolio and is the first in a pipeline of Capri properties which are expected to open in Asia. The new brand has been designed to meet the lifestyle needs of the digital generation, equipped with a wide range of in-room technology, including interactive 'e-concierge' walls. The brand is positioned to bridge the gap between hotels and serviced residences and is aimed at meeting the short-term accommodation needs of today's technology savvy travellers.
 
ONYX Plans Major International Expansion Return to Headlines
Bangkok-based ONYX Hospitality is planning a major international expansion, with the opening of new hotels in major emerging markets in South Asia, Greater China and the Middle East. The company's upscale brand, Amari, will be making its debut in Qatar and India by the end of 2012, with the Amari Doha and Amari Ludhiana, respectively. OZO, ONYX's select service brand, will open its first property in Hong Kong in early 2013 before opening in Thailand and Sri Lanka in late 2013 and 2014, respectively. Additionally, the company will open a new property in Hangzhou, under its luxury boutique serviced apartment brand, Sharma, in late 2013.
