On 30 November, HVS Madrid, in collaboration with IE (Instituto de Empresa), a leading business school based in Madrid, invited selected developers, operators, and financial institutions to a seminar on international hospitality brands in Spain. The seminar was a follow-up to a similar event held in January 2010, which was also supported by CEHAT, the Spanish Hospitality Association. The meeting was also attended by several journalists from Spain’s leading business newspapers and other industry publications.
An introductory speech from Joan Molas, President of CEHAT, opened the event, followed by a presentation by Philip Bacon, Managing Director of HVS Madrid, on the current situation of hotel brands in Spain. Philip discussed the presence of domestic brands versus international brands and identified future trends, analyzing the recent hotel openings in Madrid and Barcelona and taking into account the recent deals made by international brands with Spanish-based hotel chains.
After this presentation, Johanna Lundstrom, Development Manager for Spain & the Nordic Region for Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, addressed the audience about the options offered by the Wyndham brand family and its recent agreement with Sol Meliá to work together managing the “Tryp” brand. The first session ended with José Oscar Lopez, financial director of GAT, a Spanish company specializing in the management of distressed hotels. He explained to the audience the advantages of a “house brand” compared to a traditional domestic or international hotel brand.
After coffee, Philip Bacon presented the new refinancing valuation model being adopted by HVS in these challenging times, and the second session ended with a question and answer session directed by Antonio Lopez de Avila, director of IE.
