EIU's View On The Financial Crisis In Europe And Its Impact On China Return to Headlines

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Chief Economist, Robin Bew, will deliver his views on the implication and effect of the economic turbulence in Europe on China. Bew will speak at the eighth annual China Hotel Investment Conference (CHIC) organised by HVS in April 2012 at the Grand Hyatt in Shanghai, China.

Bew's address is expected to cover pertinent points on the minds of investors, lenders and developers, such as how the structural issues of insolvency, idleness, inflation and instability will weigh on global growth over the coming decade, whether the euro zone can survive in its present form, and what the growth outlook is for Europe in the light of the crisis. Other points include to what extent the US economy is being affected and how policymakers will respond, whether China can achieve the much-talked about soft landing and what the long-term prospects hold.

As the long-standing Chief Economist and Editorial Director of EIU, Bew is responsible for the formulation of the EIU's overarching view on the outlook for the global economy and responsible for all editorial operations across the company worldwide, driving the intellectual debate within the business. EIU is an independent business within The Economist Group. Through research and analysis, EIU offers forecasting and advisory services to help business leaders prepare for opportunity, empowering them to act with confidence when making strategic decisions.

The HVS-organised CHIC is an annual networking conference which brings together over 700 of the top minds in the international hospitality, real estate investment and finance community. The most influential conference is co-hosted together with China Tourism Academy, the research think-tank of China National Tourism Administration, and Beijing International Studies University for the eighth year running. CHIC 2012 will be held at the Grand Hyatt Shanghai from 18 to 20 April 2012. To register for the conference or obtain more information, visit www.chinahotelconference.com or contact HVS Shanghai [email protected] +86 21 5171 7002.

Located in the heart of Jakarta's financial, entertainment and shopping district, Pullman Jakarta Indonesia has 427 guestrooms and suites in two wings - Pullman Tower and Executive Tower, offering panoramic views of the city. The hotel is located opposite Plaza Indonesia and within walking distance of the Grand Indonesia malls and many of the city's commercial buildings. The hotel's guestrooms, lobby, restaurants and ballroom are undergoing major refurbishment work in batches. New event facilities expected to host up to 1,000 guests for meetings, conventions and other major events are being added. The refurbishment exercise is expected to complete in mid-2013.

Hong Kong Plans To Open 49 Hotels By 2016 Return to Headlines
Hong Kong will have another 49 hotels or 9,000 additional rooms in four years. However, the supply may still be insufficient, with the tourism chief suggesting the renovation of industrial buildings to keep pace with visitor growth. According to the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, the city is expected to have 238 hotels by 2016, 49 more than at present, with 16 of them coming on line this year. The number of hotel rooms is also expected to climb to 71,340 by that time - 9,000 more than at present. However, the tourism commissioner has hinted that this may still be insufficient although it would be difficult to plan ahead since the government only releases land for hotel use on a year-to-year basis in line with tourism growth. According to the Hong Kong Tourism Board, a record 42 million tourists visited the city last year, up 16.5% from 2010, with mainlanders accounting for 67% of the tourist arrivals. Tourist arrivals are anticipated to grow another 5.5% in 2012.
