Starwood Brings Element Brand to Asia Return to Headlines
Starwood Hotels & Resorts has announced plans to debut its new eco-friendly brand, Element, in Asia. Expected to open in mid-2016, the Element Suzhou Science & Technology Town will be located the Suzhou Science & Technology Town, a new eco-friendly development zone in Jiangsu Province, China. The property will feature 190 rooms, a fitness centre, indoor heated swimming pool and meeting rooms. All of Element's properties aim to be certified by LEED, a programme designed to measure the environmental performance of buildings. The launch of Element, which was started in 2008, now means that all of Starwood's nine brands are present in the Asia Pacific region.

New Sumatra Airport to Launch in July Return to Headlines

The new Kuala Namu International Airport is set to open on 25 July 2013 and will take over from Medan's Polonia International Airport as the new gateway for the North Sumatra region. The new airport will become the second largest and second busiest airport in Indonesia, after Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and will be able to handle 16 million passengers upon completion of its second phase. The Kuala Namu Airport will be connected to Medan by an airport rail line, which is able to carry 172 passengers, 15 times a day.

 
Marriott's Fairfield Brand to Launch in Asia Return to Headlines

Marriott International will debut its mid-scale brand, Fairfield, in Asia Pacific with the upcoming opening of the 148-key Fairfield by Marriott Bengaluru Rajajinagar. Anticipated to open in September 2013, the new property will be situated close to Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre and 50 minutes away from the Bengaluru International Airport. Marriott International plans to introduce the Fairfield brand in Tier Two and Tier Three Indian cities including Surat, Vadodara, Indore, Ranchi, Manesar, Goa, Mumbai, Lucknow, Noida and Visakhapatnam.

 
Genting Singapore Breaks Ground for New Hotel in Jurong Return to Headlines

Genting Singapore has broken ground for its new property in Singapore. Anticipated to open in the first half of 2015, the new development is set to be the first hotel to open in the Jurong Lake District. The 550-room property will be the seventh hotel development for Genting Singapore, which currently owns six hotel properties at Resorts World Sentosa. The site of the new property is located five minutes from the Jurong East MRT interchange and situated close to the International Business Park.

 
Philippines Eyes Tourism Boost with Relaunch of Flights to Europe Return to Headlines

Following the lifting of a ban on Philippine Airlines (PAL) from the European Union's aviation blacklist, Philippines is now targeting 6.8 million international visitor arrivals for 2014, a 24% increase from 2013's target of 5.5 million international visitor arrivals. PAL, the country's national carrier, had been banned from EU airspace for three years, however with the lifting of the ban, the airline is eager to resume flights to Europe. Destinations in Europe under consideration include London, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Madrid. The airline has also added three new destinations in Australia to its flight route and is planning on resuming flights to the Middle East in October. The increase in flight routes is anticipated to help boost tourism arrivals in the country and to help reach Philippines' goal of 10 million international arrivals by 2016.
