Dear HVS Alumni,
The
last couple of years have been challenging for the entire world,
and especially for southern Europe. The difficult economic
environment and the fiscal uncertainty caused the majority of
financial institutions – as well as hoteliers – to be much more
careful with their assessments. This situation created a unique
opportunity for HVS, as a large number of clients turned to our
offices to get the most realistic estimate of the future
performance or value of projects under consideration.
HVS's unique company network became the vehicle of our
success; in many cases, HVS offices joined forces to serve our
clients in a professional and consistent way. The Athens office
experienced this collaborative effort, joining forces for
selective projects with HVS offices in London, Dubai, and even
further afield – São Paulo. Moreover, the HVS entrepreneurial
business model gives our offices the flexibility to respond
rapidly to any opportunity or request. HVS Athens has been
involved in projects in Mauritius, Morocco, Georgia, Malta, and
beyond, even though our location suggests a much tighter
geographic region, including the Balkans and the Eastern
Mediterranean, as the best-case scenario.
Global recognition of the high quality of HVS services gave us
the momentum to expand the physical presence of the Athens
office to nearby countries, starting with Italy. The feedback we
received has been positive, and we are in the process of
establishing some solid relationships with a number of financial
institutions in Italy that will hopefully bring us substantial
business in the near future.
Life is always exciting at HVS!
Sincerely,
Demetris Spanos
Managing Director - HVS Athens

REVAMPED: HVS ECO SERVICES |
|
 |
 |
In May of this year, the Eco Services reins were passed on to
HVS New Delhi. Since then the team has been busy setting up
fresh standards for the
ECOTEL®
Certification, revamped the website (www.ECOTELHotels.com)
and have also worked on a resort property in South India. The
next innovation to look forward to is a brand new online
reservation system, created in-house by the HVS team in India,
for member ECOTELs. For the certification standards, HVS is
working with GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria, an
initiative by the UN Environment Programme) to introduce the
standards for hotels regionally and possibly even globally. |

HOSI: HOTEL OPERATIONS SUMMIT, INDIA
The HVS offices in India are gearing up to host the 2nd Annual
Hotel Operations Summit India (HOSI 2010) on 15th and 16th of
December at the Leela Kempinski Gurgaon. Take a look at their
teaser here. In 2009, HVS India recognized and first
conceptualized the idea of organizing a platform for Hotel
Operations that would bring together pioneers in the industry
where not only the Hotel owners, developers and management
companies but hotel operations professionals could discuss the
best practices and techniques of a successful hotel.

Roger S. Cline
I started my career in the hospitality industry at Westminster Hotel School in London and went on to work at the Ritz Hotel in Paris and then the Waldorf Astoria in New York. My career plan was to move from one great city to another around the world working in the greatest hotels and one day settle down somewhere and either run one as a manager, or better yet own one! But New York became a great magnet for me and I have been living here ever since. After the Waldorf, I went to Columbia Business School and upon graduation in 1970, joined the consulting division of the accounting firm Harris Kerr Forster (it was later to be renamed Pannell Kerr Forster or “PKF”). Our office was in the Graybar Building at 420 Lexington Avenue and while there I met a chap called Stephen Rushmore, who was working in the same building and who coincidentally was a neighbor of mine in Roslyn, Long Island.
One day, Steve came to visit Eric Green, a partner at PKF and myself to ask for some help with the financial projections section of a book he was writing called “The Valuation of Hotels and Motels”. Well Eric and I pitched in and Steve finished his book and then had it published by the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers – the rest, as they say, is history.
Steve and I stayed in touch and during the 1980s when I was a Senior Vice President at Omni Hotels in charge of development, I would on more than one occasion come across (and rely upon) the work of Steve’s growing firm – HVS. The firm was doing great work and I was duly impressed. So much so that in 1990, I decided to propose to Steve a collaboration in the investment banking field, something I had wanted to do for a while. We partnered up and called it HVS Financial Services. Well we had picked a tough time to promote hospitality investment banking – the early 1990s had seen a big fall-off in real estate markets and so I spent part of my time helping Steve grow the HVS practice. It was a great experience. I could bike to work in the summer months (Mineola was only 3.5 miles from my house!). But after a few years, a bigger firm beckoned and it was hard to resist – the title was “Worldwide Head of Hospitality Consulting” at a firm called Arthur Andersen. It was quite an experience, until one day nine years later, the firm decided to close down much of its operations in the wake of a little problem that came to be known as the Enron saga.
Well I picked myself up, dusted myself off and started my own firm – Roundhill Hospitality, a consultancy which is focused on high-level strategy work, M&A due diligence and litigation support. I’ve been having a grand time, continue to see the great work produced by HVS all over the world and count myself honored to have had the chance to work with Steve and to see the firm flourish in such a terrific way.
Well done Steve, happy anniversary and here’s to another thirty years of health, happiness and prosperity! |

Peggy Yip
I left HVS in 2006 and worked for Horwath HTL up until about a year ago. I decided to take about a month off to do some traveling. I ended up in Boston, Chicago, Brussels, Amsterdam, Rome, Florence, Milan, Venice, and Osaka and had a wonderful time. I'm now with Preferred Hotel Group as the Director of Marketing for Asia Pacific based in Hong Kong. It's a challenging position especially with limited marketing knowledge. I'm enjoying it very much and it's given me great opportunities to travel regionally and experience another aspect of the hospitality industry. During Teresa Lam's short trip to Hong Kong, she and I met up in July and enjoyed a nice lunch together. |

Lucienne Anhar
I joined HVS New York after graduating from Ecole Hoteliere de
Lausanne in 2000. I left HVS in 2003 for Bali (No, this is not
another version of the Eat, Pray, Love novel – but rather to
expand my family business). In the past six years, my luxury
boutique hotel group called Tugu (www.tuguhotels.com) has
expanded to a group of 4 hotels and spas in Bali, Lombok and
Java, and 4 independent flagship restaurants in Jakarta, with a
few new projects underway. The Tugu properties, featuring one of
the largest collections of Indonesian antiques, have received
many accolades as some of the most beautiful hotels in Asia, and
are proudly the only luxury hotel group in the country that is
100% Indonesian in terms of brand, management, service, and
design.
(Editor’s note: Lucienne is now one of the leading
hoteliers in Indonesia and has recently named Woman of the Year
in Bali! Congratulations, Lucienne!) |
