Dear
Alumni,
2010 brings a new ray of hope for us in the hospitality
industry.
As governments around the world collaborate and introduce
measures to stabilize and stimulate the financial markets, a
brighter global economy is anticipated for 2010. According to
the latest EIU report, a turnaround in GDP from -2.5% in 2009 to
+2.5% is projected in 2010 for the world’s largest economy (the
U.S.). Similarly, for Japan, GDP is forecast at +1.4% in 2010
after suffering a -5.5% adjustment the year before. China’s
economy is expected to continue to propel forward, by +9.6% in
2010 after a stellar +8.7% last year.
HVS partners from around the world met recently in San Francisco
to discuss the firm’s strategy going forward. Despite having
just gone through one of the most challenging years, the
partners’ summit was a remarkable experience. It was
characterized by a high level of energy, commitment, and
determination to bring HVS to greater heights, and enhance its
reputation as a leading hospitality consultancy firm worldwide.
Much enthusiasm was in evidence to share and embrace best
practices, and a relentless spirit to pursue excellence pervaded
the gathering.
As an international firm with a global perspective, the quest to
expand our presence and leadership in various parts of the world
continues. We are pleased to mark the 30th anniversary with 30
HVS offices around the world. In 2009, two offices were
established: HVS Lima in Peru, led by Graciana Garcia Iribarne,
and HVS Bahamas in the Caribbean, headed by Parris Jordan. These
events were made possible through the vision of the firm’s
Founder and President, Steve Rushmore, who continues to motivate
aspiring associates to establish long-term careers with HVS and
to grant them the opportunity to become partners through the
establishment of new offices and services.
Cross-border experiences have also played a role in career
development opportunities for HVS associates. As Managing
Director of HVS Singapore, I have fond memories of numerous
associates joining us in Asia from other parts of the world.
They have included our alumni, Nevius Glussi, previously with
HVS New York and HVS Singapore, and now a partner of Limetree
Capital Hong Kong; Hala Matar Choufany, now Managing Director of
HVS Dubai following her stint with HVS London and HVS Shanghai;
Marc Kramer (ex-HVS London), Director and Head of the HVS
Consulting & Valuation division based in Singapore; Dan Voellm
(ex-HVS New York), Director of HVS Hong Kong; Adeline Phua
(ex-HVS Singapore), Associate Director of HVS Shanghai; and
Michael Schwarz (ex-HVS London), Associate Director of HVS
Beijing.
May I wish all HVS alumni and colleagues a brilliant New Year!
Sincerely,
David Ling

SCHEDULED
FOR MARCH 26 - 28, 2010 |
|
 |
The 2nd annual New Orleans Roadfood Festival, scheduled for the
weekend of March 26-28, 2010, will transform 5 blocks of Royal
Street in the French Quarter into a Foodie’s Paradise. HVS, the
leader in global hospitality consulting and services, will again
sponsor the Food-Lover’s Festival.
Twenty vendors from among Louisiana’s best restaurants and
destination Roadfood restaurants around the country will serve
legendary dishes, in affordable sample-size portions.
Festival-goers can enjoy:
- Real Texas barbecue from Louie Mueller’s
- Seafood chowder from the Maine Diner
- Shrimp Uggie made by Anthony and Gail Uglesich – coming
out of retirement for the Festival!
- Tucson Tamale Company’s hot tamales
- Tony Luke’s Philadelphia cheese steaks
- Boudin sausage from T-Boy’s slaughterhouse
- And MORE!
The excitement kicks off Friday, March 26 with a VIP
Opening Party, where Roadfood.com will present the inaugural
Blue Plate Award, honoring men and women who embody the best
of America’s regional cuisine, to Anthony and Gail Uglesich.
The New Orleans Roadfood Festival will also host:
- The creation of the World’s Longest Po’Boy
- A beignet eating contest
- A Saturday evening crawfish boil and pig roast
- Strolling brass bands
“You can travel for miles and months around the country and
never discover all the great dishes that Roadfood Festival
goers will indulge in during one weekend,” Rushmore says.
“This weekend presents the best opportunity for passionate
foodies to discover and enjoy the best specialties that
define American food at its most flavorful.”
The New Orleans Roadfood Festival is free. Proceeds from the
sales of food and beverage will go back to participating
restaurants, including New Orlean’s Café Reoncile, which
gives at-risk youth the opportunity to learn about the food
service business. Last year’s inaugural Festival attracted
more than 15,000 visitors. For more information, visit the
Festival at Facebook and Twitter. |

Jared Muenks
Analyst, Global Analysis & Capital
Financial Planning & Analysis
Hilton Worldwide
As for my job/title, I am essentially doing financial analysis
at a corporate level. I am looking at financial statements of
the company as a whole and figuring out where to save Hilton
money at a company level and a hotel level. Also, my department
is in charge of capital expenditures, so we analyze and approve
capital that hotels want to spend. Since the department was
created/restructured as part of the move, we are expected to get
a lot more finance related projects and initiatives over the
next several quarters, so I am sure my job description will be
ever changing for a while. So far it is really interesting
seeing how a major multi-billion dollar company runs from the
inside, however, it is pretty different from what I was doing
before, which is a nice change. The majority of what I am doing
now is finance related and not so hotel related, but who knows,
that could easily change in the near future. |

copy of his proud father (except he has more hair). |

Bernard Forster
VP Asset Management, Africa & Indian Ocean
IFA Hotels & Resorts
Once upon a time (12 years ago to be precise) I joined the HVS
London team. I had so many great experiences in my time there:
from eating cane rat in the Ivory Coast, to wine tasting in Cape
Town and fighting off hordes of bed bugs in Munich. My greatest
experience at HVS was, of course, meeting Jane Clarke, my future
wife, in 2005. My ten years of loyal service at HVS came to an
end when I decided to make a move back to Africa, joining IFA
Hotels and Resorts as VP of Asset Management for the Africa and
Indian Ocean region.
With Jane’s support, I moved to South Africa and now use those
skills I honed at HVS in a wide range of areas: from the
creation of Home Owner Associations to the implementation of
sales and marketing initiatives, ‘greener’ operational practices
at property level, challenging current practices amongst major
international hotel chains, and even buying Zebras! Working
round the clock is a habit I’ve never managed to break.
It has also been important for me to spend time with family
over the past two years. Moving to Zimbali brought me much
closer to my mother’s house in Namibia and Jane and I were
married on 23 May 2009. We were joined on the day by a number of
long-time colleagues from HVS, and now old friends, including my
best man Hadrien Pujol; most of these fine people had travelled
thousands of miles to share our joy on the day and it was great
to see them. Hadrien certainly did not miss out on the
opportunity to talk about some of my more questionable field
work habits!
Our next port of call is Dubai, where I’ll continue in the
same role for IFA but with increased resposibilities while Jane,
following her success in the organisation of our beautiful
wedding, has started an event and wedding planning course with a
view to turning her event-organisation skills into a career!
Although moving to Dubai means we’ll miss the World Cup in June,
I have thoroughly enjoyed South Africa, which is a fantastic
country with so much to do, and I am looking forward to taking
on a new challenge supported by a great team. |
